Ministry Explores Specific IBS Components for Affordable Housing

Kuching, Malaysia – March 31, 2010
The Housing and Urban Development Ministry is setting its sights on innovative building solutions through Industrialised Building System (IBS) components that could play a vital role in the future of affordable housing in the state.

A Delegation Exploring New Possibilities

Led by Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, a delegation recently visited Zhangjiagang and Shanghai to study advanced construction materials. Their visits included:

  • Magnesium oxide board factories

  • High-frequency welded beam factories

  • Plastic window and door frame factories in Nanxiang, which are also recognized IBS components

These visits aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness, practicality, and suitability of these materials for future housing development programs, particularly the state’s longhouse loan programme.

Strengthening International Collaboration

The delegation also traveled to Hong Kong, where they met with representatives of China Source International (CSI) to discuss suitable building materials for state housing projects.

Delegation members included:

  • Dr. Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Chairman of Daya Perumahan Sdn Bhd

  • Affandi Keli, Housing and Urban Development Ministry Secretary

  • Wan Moss, CEO of Housing Development Corporation (HDC)

  • Mohd Yusop Van Moss, HDC Chief Engineer

  • Sapri Ahmad, Pantai Damai Assemblyman

Learning Beyond Building Materials

While in Hong Kong, Abang Johari and his team also studied the city’s integrated public transport system, including ferries, buses, trams, and the Mass Transit Railway (MTR). A key takeaway was Hong Kong’s Octopus Card System, which allows passengers to use a single smart card across all transportation modes. This system is also being adopted in Beijing and Shanghai, offering lessons in smart city integration.

A Step Towards Affordable Housing Innovation

This international exposure is expected to guide the Ministry in identifying new building technologies that are not only cost-effective but also sustainable and practical for local housing needs. By considering IBS components, the Ministry hopes to accelerate affordable housing projects while ensuring long-term quality and efficiency.
